Lawmakers Seek Increased Security After Donald Trump’s Remarks On The “Progressive Squad”

Date:

Bennie G. Thompson, the House Homeland Security Committee Chairman, asked for extra level of protection for the members of Congress after President Donald Trump made tweets and remarks about the progressive squad.

All of Trump’s remarks and comments were directed towards four congresswomen namely – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts. All the four congresswomen are American citizens and out of them, three are born in the US itself.

Forget backing down from what he said, Trump put more emphasis on Monday on the comments he had made earlier on Twitter, that if the lawmakers hate our country, they can as well go back to their cities which are crime infested. He said, “If you’re not happy in the US, if you’re complaining all the time, you can leave, you can leave right now”.

Thompson argued in a letter for House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving and Senate Sergeant at Arms Michael Stenger, that the Capitol Police Board should analyze the current threat in the environment and set limits for enhanced safety of the members.

In the letter, Thompson said that the security offcials must set certain thresholds for enhanced security for certain members that may get targeted after the remarks made by Trump. She also asked the security officials to evaluate threat streams with law enforcement partners in the Member districts. Thompson further said that being proactive is crucial for not only those members who are in a danger of being targeted, but for all the member of the Congress.

According to various news reporting agencies, despite the plea made by Thompson, the lawmakers who did not include the members of the squad, are facing far more serious threats than the members of the squad. All this is happening after the tweets and remarks put on Twitter by Donald Trump.
