Australia is quickly rising to the top of the list of preferred locations for higher education. Numerous Australian universities have high rankings in the 2022 Times Higher Education World University Rankings due to their excellence in research output, teaching, and learning, and global perspective.

However, even though we wouldn't encourage any students to select a university based on its attractiveness, it is always worthwhile taking a closer look at a potential institution's appearance. The Times Higher Education Student team combed through hundreds of photographs of Australian colleges and universities to compile a list of the most stunning universities in Australia.

    1. University of Sydney

The University of Sydney's main campus, located in the suburbs, has frequently been hailed as one of the most stunning in the world. The top-ranked institution's buildings are constructed of Sydney sandstone, yet they are modelled after the classic English collegiate architecture found at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Awe-inspiring features are the Great Tower and the main quadrangle. These buildings, created by architect Edmund Blacket and finished in 1862, make up the university's neo-Gothic core. The University of Sydney, well-known for its Hogwarts-style structures, continuously adds contemporary designs, such as the new Law School, which opened in 2009 and garnered several architectural honours.

    1. University of Queensland

One of Australia's oldest colleges and universities, the University of Queensland is considered a "sandstone university" in Australia. The university, primarily situated in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, has multiple campuses, the largest of which, St. Lucia, covers an area of 114 hectares and is flanked by the Brisbane River. The Great Court is located in the 1930s-era sandstone Cloister at the centre of the structure. The school boasts expansive, groomed grounds, three lakes, an aquatic centre, tennis courts, and eight athletics ovals with a 600-seat grandstand as if that weren't already an ideal enough description.

    1. University of Melbourne

The University of Melbourne, the second-oldest university in Australia, consists of 12 residential colleges and a significant campus in Parkville that blends old sandstone buildings with modern architecture, sustainable design, and green areas. The 19th-century structures at Janet Clarke Hall, Trinity College, and Ormond College are covered with ivy. At the same time, the Baillieu Library, built in the 20th century and inaugurated in 1959, features movable walls. A brand-new arts building with Vivienne Westwood designs and magnificent staircases was erected in 2016.

    1. The University of Tasmania

In Australia's island state's only university, the University of Tasmania, students are surrounded by an endless supply of breath-taking natural beauty. There are three main campuses: Burnie in the northwest, Launceston in the north, and Hobart in the south, so the university is accessible from anywhere on the island. All campuses are near breath-taking rivers, mountains, and beaches. For instance, the Hobart Sandy Bay campus overlooks the Derwent estuary and is located in Mount Wellington's shadow.

    1. University of Adelaide

The University of Adelaide, founded in 1874, is the third-oldest university in Australia, and the exquisite period architecture reflects it’s long past. One of the university's first structures, the Mitchell Building (see below), was created by Irish architect William McGinn and built on the main campus between 1879 and 1881. It is also of the best Gothic Revival specimens in Adelaide. Another notable feature of the site is the Barr Smith Library, the most extensive library in the Southern Hemisphere. The Reading Room, with its golden ceiling, is a must-see.

    1. University of Western Australia

The University of Western Australia was designed to have a "buildings in a park" aesthetic when it was founded in 1914. The 1,000-seat Somerville Auditorium includes walkways that stretch out into lush green lawns, an outdoor stage set against a backdrop of towering pine trees, a sunken garden with ponds, and several flower beds. The university buildings have earned prizes or are included on the register of historical places, while the greens are included in the Register of the National Estate. The Swan River borders Perth and Kings Park campus, home to more than 70 distinct bird species. The university's closeness to Western Australia's arid area and unspoiled coasts may be its most significant selling point.

    1. University of New South Wales

The University Of New South Wales (UNSW), situated in the Sydney district of Kensington, is far from Bondi Beach and Coogee Beach. Coogee, the closest beach, is great for swimming and is essentially Bondi with fewer people. The Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney and the core business centre, which provides breath-taking views of Sydney Harbour, are near the UNSW.

    1. The University of New England

The University of New England was founded in 1938 and is located in the scenic town of Armidale, New South Wales. Both students and visitors enjoy the university's rural location. With about 50% of students living in the colleges enrolled on campus, it boasts one of the most comprehensive residential college systems in Australia. It is located on 74 hectares of heritage parkland and offers a wide range of sporting facilities with quick access to the local rivers, gorges, and waterfalls.

    1. University of Wollongong

The University of Wollongong (UOW), founded in 1951, frequently ranks first in the rankings of Australia's most picturesque campuses. The Wollongong campus is an excellent example of Australia's natural beauty since it is tucked between a mountain range covered in trees and the Pacific Ocean's turquoise waves. All the buildings are contemporary, but the scenery truly shines; for lovers of the great outdoors, 17 surf beaches are staffed with lifeguards and 15 nature trails.
