Sydney’s favourite festival of lights, music and ideas has made a return in 2022 with a wide range of events that are sure to blow you away. This annual festivity celebrates the creative and artistic excellence of the city through large-scale light installations, exhilarating music programmes and thought-stimulating discussions and workshops. It is the biggest festival of its kind and the entire city transforms into a giant exhibition, showcasing the talents and creativity of innovators from Australia, and the world. Here are some insights on how you can make the most of the festival.

    Head to the Best Vantage

While millions flock to the harbour city of Australia from far and near to watch the festival, it is important that you know of the best viewpoints or lookouts and get a head start. When we talk about views, a Vivid Cruise in Sydney Harbour always pops up and for good reasons. You get to experience unparalleled views of all the harbour fiestas, including the Lighting of the Sails of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Luna Park, some glimpses of Circular Quay, Barangaroo and much more! Now that’s a view! All top vessels including the multi-million dollar catamaran, the premium glass boat and the authentic paddlewheeler, offer exquisite angles of the harbour and illuminated city skyline. Traversing the harbour waterways on a Sydney Vivid Cruise is also an ideal option if you're looking for a stunning dining spot. With a freshly prepared dinner and a fully licensed-bar, you are guaranteed to have a ball of a time!

    Best Time to Go

Lights On will be visible from 6pm onwards everyday till June 18 and you can see it from anywhere with a view of the Opera House. The Lighting of the Sails of the Opera House marks the opening of Vivid each night, as colourful 3D projections burst onto the canvas that are Sydney's landmarks and skyscrapers. This sets the tone for the festival. You can be in the midst of massive crowds during the weekend so it is best if you could hop out on a weeknight. The last week might be the busiest so it is advised to explore Vivid during the first weeks.

    Best Attractions

2022 marks the much-awaited return for Vivid and this year the festival will be going a bit further than its previous years, with over 200 events including many festival firsts, spread across numerous prominent and surprising locations. If you have only a limited time to enjoy the festival then give these attractions a whirl, starting with the longest Light Walk ever. Light Walk is a guided walk through the city, offering you plenty of views, music and live entertainment  along the way. The Light Walk, this year, is 8kms long, starting from the Central Station and all the way through the Opera House, with over 200 sculptural birds as part of the Future Natives installation. Vivid Live at the Opera House is also an unmissable attraction celebrating the city’s creativity through light projections, concerts, pop-up entertainment and more. Sydney Infinity at Darling Harbour is an epic visual and sonic experience featuring robotic fountains, which can burst tons of water into the air in what will be the biggest liquid-music event.

    Is Vivid Free?

Vivid is totally inclusive and you can enjoy much of the festival for free. It is free to enjoy and explore and there’s no additional fees to experience the 3D projections, shows, installations and numerous music events including the Tumbalong Park concert. Although most part of the festival is free there are numerous events like talks, lectures and some concerts that are ticketed, so be sure to check the website before planning your night out.
