Can I Say No to an Apartment Inspection?

It is normal for landlords to want to complete an inspection with their tenants at some point. There is usually an inspection when the tenant moves in and another one when they move out. If the tenant lives in the apartment for a long time, then they can also go through other inspections where the landlord will check out the apartment and make sure everything is in good working order. But some tenants wonder whether they can say no to these apartment inspections or not.

There are times when you will not be able to keep the landlord out of your apartment. While they are not allowed to come in whenever they want as that is your home and you do have an expectation of privacy, you also have to remember that the landlord owns the property and has a right to make sure that you are taking care of it as well. Each state will have their own rules about these inspections and the reasons that the landlord is able to enter the property, so it is a good idea to know some of the rules ahead of time.

For example, if there is an emergency with the apartment, the landlord is often able to enter inside, even without much notice at all. This is done to help protect all the residents within the facility. In addition, if you abandon the property, the landlord is able to come in and take possession over the property. These two things are allowed in pretty much any state you will rent in. Other states will only allow the landlord to come into the property for a specific reason, like showing the apartment to tenants. In some cases, you can say no, but it depends on the reason.

In most instances, it is best to let the landlord in, especially if they give you written notice of the time and reason for the inspection. If they come all the time, then they may have an issue, but most landlords just want to check the property and make sure it is good working order for you while you live there.
